city, alabama, gabe guttierez, a tough few days. another emotional day ahead, i suspect. >> reporter: that's right. this afternoon mourners are preparing to remember that slain bus driver. police appear willing to wait this one out. as police towed the school bus from the crime scene friday, investigators released the first picture of the man they say is responsible. 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes. the man believed to be holding hostage a boy with asberger's syndrome named ethan in an underground bunker. >> we understand he's got supplies there. he's got food there. but this is a young child five years old. has he got food that this child will eat? >> reporter: nbc news has confirmed dykes served in the u.s. navy in the 60s. he served various awards, a good conduct med methal and vietnam service medal. but on tuesday those honors seem very far away. police say dykes boarded a stopped school bus and demanded two random young children. when the bus drive refused, plea say dykes shot and killed him and made off with 5-year-old ethan. kelly miller says her kids got off that bus right before

mild autism as well. gabe gutierrez joins us from midland city, alabama. gabe, we know authorities have been talking to dykes through that pvc pipe of some sort. do we know whether he's asking for anything? >> reporter: craig, we've been following this story for days. police are very tightlipped about what their communication with dykes involves. we don't know if he's making any demeans, but yesterday we did hear from the sheriff and saw some signs of how sensitive these negotiations have become. the shefb thariff thavsnked the for taking care of our child. law enforcement authorities may believe that the suspect has access to television in the bunker. he has an electric heater, blankets and treating the child relatively well and the child so far was not physically harmed, but not many details on the nature of the negotiations. this has been going on for more than 118 hours, since tuesday afternoon, when police say that suspect, jimmy lee dykes boarded that school bus, demanded two children and shot and killed the bus driver and took off with 5-year-old ethan according to police. they h

in new orleans. it's a situation where everything post 9/11 happens in a major city like superdome you have to start asking questions. there was no terrorism involved. nothing that way. the crowd never got to be in a panicked state when half of the power went out. when the company that supplies the energy to the superdome said basically it was a power surge. the system thought there was an abnormality and shut down. equivalent of at your house a power breaker goes off. a breaker broke. and the half of the energy in the stadium goes off. half the power goes off. here's the thing, for those of you watching at home you had no explanation because the power went out on the side of the announcers, jim nance and phil simms for cbs. you could not hear them because the power was out on their side of the stadium as well. so fans were in the dark inside the stadium and all over the world because there was no explanation. what happened was there was a surge -- there was no fire as originally reported. and the players resumed after 34 minutes on of a power outage. >> 34 long minutes. it felt like i

a comment from the mayor of midland city, virgil skipper. so i spoke with him this morning about if he, indeed, heard the boy crying himself. so i said, have you been to the bunker? she said no, i haven't been past the barrier. did you speak with someone who heard the boy crying i asked him. he said no one told me that specifically. so that was speculation about this boy crying in a bunker fer his parents. he said you know he's crying. he's a 6-year-old boy. well, we know that he's 5, and that again is just an assumption that the boy is crying. we'll get more information from the authorities when this news conference starts in a few moments. miguel? >> such a crazy way this unfolded with the bus driver, incredibly brave bus driver, keeping this gunman from getting on the bus, letting 20-some kids out the back, this other young man taken by him. do we have any sense of a possible motive? >> reporter: this all started on tuesday when a school bus stopped in front of a road that leads up to the property owned by jimmy lee dykes. what we know from someone who lives in this community, has b

tonight. we are waiting for a news conference and late new details now from mid lachbd city as we wait for authorities to step innen frots of the captain rahs. i want to bring you up to date on what went down today. the boy in question, 5-year-old ethan is safe tonight. we just got this photo to the left of him entering the hospital safe and sound, his armed captor an alleged killer is dead. jimmy lee dykes grabbed the boy from a school bus six days ago. after holding the boy in a bunker for nearly a week now, talking with authorities through a pvc pipe things began breaking down. today authorities went in saving the boy and killing jimmy lee dykes. we're waiting to hear from state, local and federal officials. president obama has spoken with fbi director mueller to congratulate him on how the operation ended, how things went down. we are joined now by marty savage who is live in midland city. what's the latest on how the little boy is doing? we know he did go to the hospital. >> reporter: yes, we've been getting some updates. he's been taken now to what's a special wing or area that's
